The theme for the Congress is ‘Promoting the Scientific Basis for Tobacco Product Regulation’. The tobacco industry faces an increasing level of new tobacco product regulation, as governments respond to their obligations under the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control or implement their own local measures such as those under the US Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.
Regulations that have the objective of helping to reduce the public health impact of the use of tobacco products should be evidence-based. As such, tobacco product regulations should be based on sound scientific evidence, openly and transparently discussed and communicated. We are building a congress programme that aims to incorporate the views of all interested parties: the developers of regulatory policy, the regulators, the public health community, the scientific community and the tobacco industry.
